Robert Berman elected as AAAS fellow

Robert F. Berman, professor of neurological surgery, has been elected as a fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for his contributions to the field of brain injury, neurodevelopmental disorders and neurotoxicology.

Berman is one of 10 UC Davis faculty members elected as AAAS fellows. All fellows will be recognized at the AAAS annual meeting in February 2020 in Seattle.
Berman specializes in research on brain disorders including fetal alcohol syndrome, autism and Fragile X-associated disorders.

Dr. O’Reilly is currently Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado, Boulder. His work focuses on biologically-based computational models of learning mechanisms in different brain areas, including hippocampus, prefrontal cortex and basal ganglia, and posterior visual cortex.

Dr. Yuko Munakata is currently Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her work investigates child development and environmental influences on children’s thinking, using behavioral, neuroimaging, and computational approaches.

‘Earworms’ Research Will Help Reveal Link Between Memories and Music

“Earworms” are those fragments of songs that get stuck on repeat in your head. While earworms are often frustrating, repeated exposure to catchy tunes can also trigger old memories, even in people whose memory skills are impaired by Alzheimer’s disease or other cognitive disorders.

Petr Janata, professor in the UC Davis Department of Psychology and the Center for Mind and Brain, and colleagues have received a $274,750 grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) to explore these links between music and memory.

Assistant Professor David Olson leads a team of researchers exploring how hallucinogenic drugs impact the structure of neurons. Olson is the cofounder of the UC Davis enabled startup Delix Therapeutics Inc., which is investigating hallucinogenic compounds for increasing neural plasticity. ​
